CHAPTER 10 JESS

I stared at my phone, feeling like I was about to have a panic attack. Why had I agreed to come to this stupid football game?

I'd never been to one before, and the thought of being surrounded by all these people made my anxiety skyrocket. But Sam and Laura had convinced me to come, and now I was stuck here, trying to make the best of it.

"You look hot, Jess. Don't worry. Tom won't know what hit him." Laura nudged me, and I smoothed over the denim shorts and football jersey I had on. The shorts were a little too short, but Sam promised me my legs looked great. As we walked into the stadium, the noise was deafening. The stands were packed, and there were so many people that they all blurred into one. Sam and Laura were practically bouncing with enthusiasm, but I just felt overwhelmed. We made our way through the crowds, searching for an open spot. That's when we spotted a few empty seats in

the middle row. We walked up, hoping to snag them, when suddenly, a few guys in rival team jerseys moved up to claim the front row. "Hey, here's some space," one said with

a charming smile. He looked at us expectantly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Should I recognize him or something?

"I shouldn't be here-Tom hasn't even spoken to me again.

When I spotted him at school, he made a run for it."1 told Sam, but she waved me off. It was so painfully obvious he was avoiding me.

So much for plan B.

As we settled in, the boy struck up a conversation with me. He told me he was Bryan and asked who I was cheering for, and I shrugged "Nobody in particular. His eyes sparkled the whole night, and I let Bryan explain the game to me. Every now and then, I'd catch Luke or Josh shooting me a dirty look from the field. It was clear they didn't want me here. Well, that's too bad. I am here, and I plan on staying.

As the game neared its end, Bryan turned to me and said, "Seems like the best linebacker in the state has a thing for you," Bryan whispered, and I froze.

"Luke? Yeah, no," I replied.

"Well, good. Any other boys on the field I should be worried about?" He pressed, his eyes locked on mine.

I shook my head and chewed on my bottom lip-

shaking my head from left to right. Bryan's face lit up, and I could feel Sam and Laura vibrating with excitement next to me. As the final whistle blew and our team celebrated their win, Bryan turned to me with a grin. "Want to grab a drink with me and relive this night?" he as I was about to answer when the game finished. Josh and Luke had won, and everyone was screaming.

"And now, to present the winning trophy, we have a special

guest, none other than professional football star and last year's MVP, Bryan Anderson!" The crowd erupted in cheers as the guy sitting beside me got up and walked across the field.

I shrugged, feeling a flush rise to my cheeks. "How was I supposed to know?" I mouthed to Laura and Sam, who looked at me in disbelief.

As Bryan presented the award, his eyes locked onto mine and flashed a sly wink at me. The warm, fluttery sensation spread through my chest. Bryan was sweet, and I could like him if I gave myself a chance. Hell, he was the hottest guy I've ever met. But before I could process the feeling, Luke and Josh appeared beside him, their scowls etched on their faces like carvings on

stone.

I squirmed in my seat, trying to break free from the weight of their disapproving glare. Sam and Laura noticed the shift in atmosphere and shot me worried glances.

Laura's voice was low and serious. "Okay, fine. We believe you about Luke's offer. He's looking at you like he wants to lock you up in a room and never let you see daylight."
